The Prince of the Moonlit Sea

Cover and interiors for RooFiction’s short story “Prince of the Moonlit Sea”, PSCC 2021.

Of course, in response to his mother’s constant companionship, the boy developed a way of disappearing.

There is always a beginning to things. The beginning of a fable, the beginning of a kingdom, the beginning of a relationship. All Kings were once Princes, and all Princes were once children, but Lucius was not given the gift of a clear beginning. Perhaps that is why he clings so tightly to things he does not understand.

Two men, one as if tree limbs sprouted like wings from his back, the other caught in his grasp, tendrils of dark roots ensaring them both.

Shousetsu Bang*Bang, Issue 87

For “What Music They Make” the October 2020 issue of online magazine Shousetsu Bang*Bang, PSCC 2020.

Journal entry, October 2020

I must have been asleep, for certainly if I had been fully awake I must have noticed the approach of such a remarkable issue. In the gloom the contents looked of considerable size, and as several artworks graced the text, it perhaps seemed bigger than it really is.

I heard a heavy step approaching behind my screen, and saw through the pixels the gleam of coming light. Then there was the sound of rattling chains and the clanking of massive bolts drawn back. A key was turned with the loud grating noise of long disuse, and the great cover swung back.

Within stood a glorious set of stories and art, sexy and queer and completely free for my perusal and enjoyment. They stood illuminated before my eyes as the device shone like a beacon, throwing long quivering shadows as it flickered in the dark of my room. I felt within my breast a stirring desire to tell the world about them, to share such marvelous news with all my friends. The Editors motioned me in with a courtly gesture, saying in excellent English, but with a strange intonation:

“Welcome to Shousetsu Bang*Bang! Enter our new issue freely and of your own free will!”

Godspeed

Cover for AE Dooland’s novella “Godspeed”, PSCC 2020.

The ghost of a pious woman has some unfinished business she needs to complete, and it’s up to two heathens – a grumpy necromancer and her jolly berserker wife – to help her.

The Song of Achilles

Custom cover for Madeline Miller’s “The Song of Achilles”, PSCC 2019.

“In front of us was a cave. But to call it that is to demean it, for it was not made of dark stone, but pale rose quartz. (…) Instruments hung in one corner, lyres and flutes,”

Greece in the age of Heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia. Here he is nobody, just another unwanted boy living in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles.
